Russia: Socio-Ecological Union (SEU)^

The Socio-Ecological Union, a Russian INES member organisation, has started to produce the "SEU TIMES", a monthly newsletter available by email. Its first issue of January 1999 has the following contents:

Iraq Crisis: New sources

Colin I. Rowat from the UK-based "Cambridge Campaign Against Sanctions on Iraq" (CASI) has produced a very recommendable 40 page briefing document named "Starving Iraq: One humanitarian disaster we can stop". WILPF Petition: Health risks of nuclear energy

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) has launched this petition which basically demands to amend the Agreement between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Health Organization (Res. WHA12-40, 28.5.59), because "This outdated agreement has prevented WHO from being able to act fully and effectively to protect populations from the risks of nuclear technology", as WILPF assesses it in the Petition.

Economic Sovereignty in a Globalising World. Creating People-Centred Economics for the 21st Century ^

• Aims of the Conference:
• Develop a deeper understanding of the nature and role of financial capital and its impact on local, national and regional economic development;
• Closely examine existing and proposed regulatory mechanisms, with the aim of regulating financial capital, fostering productive investment and promoting sustainable 'people-centred' development.
• Review national, regional and international financial institutions and their programs;
• Propose new mechanisms and institutions, or reforms to those already in existence, in order to increase their accountability and democracy.
• Create a platform of joint action that articulates agreed principles, defines common objectives and demands, and produces concrete proposals for economic reform.
• Four working groups:
• Institutional Reform & New Institutions
• Market Reform & Regulatory Mechanisms
• National Political & Policy Reform;
• People-Centred Alternatives

Each working group will identify priorities, articulate demands and proposals, and develop education and campaign strategies
