OSLO, Norway, January 5, 1999 (ENS) - Russia has conducted five subcritical tests of nuclear weaponry at the Arctic Novaya Zemlya archipelago between September 14 and December 13, 1998 according to the Norwegian nuclear watchdog group Bellona. Deputy Nuclear Energy Minister Lev Ryabev acknowledged last week that both weapons grade plutonium and uranium were used, contradicting Russia's previous denials, Bellona's Thomas Nilsen reported.

Millennium 2000: Walking the Ways of Peace
This major anti-nuclear event is hosted by the US-based Nevada Desert Experience and is scheduled for December 29, 1999 to January 2, 2000. The highlight will be a candlelight procession onto the Nevada Test Site, USA, at midnight on December 31, 1999.
