I've just posted this letter off to Ted Grossman at the Sounder:
Dear Editor,
I was gratified the Sounder included my voice in coverage of the Orcas meeting of the Tariff Policy Committee. I must clarify that I spoke representing the Green Party of San Juan County.
Local Greens sounded the citizenry and researched the fare proposal to prepare, present, distribute, publish and post a formal Ferry Fares Policy for consideration by islanders, the TPC and our legislators. The Greens' position paper lays out clear principles underpinning specific and general proposals for ferry finances, operations, scheduling and fares.
Many islanders received the Greens' charts showing how proposed "time-based" inequities spike our fares (compared to downSound), and target hardest hits at our Seniors and Ticketbooks (compared to tourist fares). The Green Policy incorporates all the spirit and a great many of the ideas islanders expressed at the public meetings. And we ask for responses to each point and proposal. Stay tuned.
Sound out and sound off on the Green Ferries Position Paper at www.interisland.net/green/gpsjc or call me at 376-5851.
Islanders across our stretched spectrum are wound up and showing up to pack the house over this fare fiasco. We're all frustrated by our weak impact when separate individuals voice shared opinions. Local representatives from our county's budding Green Party stood up at every opportunity to speak our islanders' public piece. Where were our county Republicans? Where were our county Democrats? No party principles. No party positions. No party proposals. No party show. Why did they sit as silent sideliners on this critical and timely grassroots issue affecting every citizen in our county? Is their every public issue action now confined to a private backroom affair? Stand up and join your neighbors in our press for islanders' most clearly expressed interests!
